Second language Learning

At Otonga students learn about other languages and cultures from age 5.

There are weekly lessons in Te Reo Maori and the school pays a visit to their local marae when possible.

From middle school (Yr 3/4) all students learn Mandarin Chinese language and culture.

Elective opportunities have also been provided for Spanish and Sign language modules.

Our Chinese teacher Siqi Yang demonstrated the ‘Guzheng’ (a 16 stringed Zither).  All classes were able to hear the wonderful music and many students were lucky enough to have a turn at playing this instrument which has been popular in China for over 2,500 years.

Our Chinese teacher this year is Ms Tingting Du. Tingting takes Mandarin and Chinese cultural lessons in our classrooms on a weekly basis.
